The Irish Under-19s lost by 49 runs to pre-tournament favourites Australia in the semi-finals of the World Cup Plate competition in Bangladesh today.
The Aussies, who were surprised to find themselves in the lower competition, scored 340 from their allotted overs. Ireland matched their counterparts in the early part of the innings before finishing on 291 for nine.
The Irish began their run-chase with purpose with openers Gary Wilson and William Porterfield in fine form. Wilson scored 48 and Porterfield 44 while the promising Eoin Morgan blasted a quick-fire 65.
Ireland also staged an exciting last-wicket partnership with Andrew Riddles (29 not out) and Allen Coulter (38 not out) keeping up the pressure on the Aussies before they ran out of overs.
