Hussain steps down after England exit

Nasser Hussain has resigned his role as England one-day captain followingtheir elimination from the World Cup today.

Hussain has been held the role of captain since 1999 but now feels that it is time for him to step down. He will, however, continue to lead the Test team.

"I have always spoken from the heart and I believe the time has come for me to step down as England one-day captain. I would like to carry on as England Test captain but I wish to take myself off the selection panel for a couple of months," he said.

The decision came on the back of the news that England are out of the Cricket World Cup after Zimbabwe's decisive Pool A match against Pakistan was abandoned because of the weather.

England were hoping Pakistan, whom they beat by 112 runs in Cape Town 10 days ago, would defeat their co-hosts but not too heavily. That scenario would have resulted in England progressing to the Super Six stage by virtue of a third place finish in Pool A on net run rate.

Elsewhere, the West Indies ended their World Cup campaign on a high after they beat Kenya by an emphatic 142-runs. Kenya will progress to the Super-Sixes regardless, but given this result, they will struggle to make any kind of impact.
