Australia scored a thrilling seven-run victory in their one-day international today after England failed to capitalise on a century opening stand. Needing 12 runs to win with four wickets in hand in the last over, England could manage only four runs for the loss of captain Nasser Hussain, who made a gallant 43. Tailender Andy Caddick faced the last three balls, hitting a two then missing the final two deliveries.
Australia won the toss and batted first, scoring 271 for four as Damien Martyn reached his century with a boundary from the last ball of the innings. Damien Martyn, who made 101 not out, shared century partnerships with Michael Bevan (52) and Jimmy Maher (49 not out).
England openers Marcus Trescothick (82) and Nick Knight (85) put the tourists in a strong position with an opening partnership of 165 in reply but England slumped to 211 for five before finishing on 264 for seven.
Australia retain their lead in the triangular series with 22 points from five matches, ahead of England on 13 points and Sri Lanka on seven. England play Sri Lanka in the eighth match of the series in Sydney on Monday.
