England batsman Michael Vaughan became the top Test run-scorer of 2002 after notching up 145 in England's second innings in the fourth Ashes Test against Australia. The Yorkshireman passed out India's Sachin Tendulkar thanks to his total of 1,481 but it wasn't a good day overall for the tourists as a middle-order collapse saw them slump to 387 all out, leaving Australia with the seeming formality of scoring 107 to win the match and by the close of play they had reached eight without loss.
Vaughan was delighted with his personal tally but regretted not being able to stay around longer to give the hosts a more difficult target to chase. "I just felt if I could have been there for a bit longer I thought we could give them 200 to chase and I'm disappointed we didn't set them more to chase tomorrow," ht told Sky Sports.
Although he was pleased to have become top Test run-scorer of the year, he was more concerned with the task in hand - the Ashes series. "I've always said I will look at my stats when my career has finished but if I'm being mentioned alongside Graham Gooch and Dennis Compton then I must be doing something right. I'm still pretty young and the stats will mean more to me when I finish my career, not at 28," he admitted.
