Marcus Trescothick led England to a spirited fightback against Australia on the second day of the first test in this Ashes series. Australia had notched up a massive 364 for two yesterday and, when play resumed today, they seemed on course for a total of around 600 but their formidable batting order collapsed to 492 all out. Although an impressive tally, it was not quite what had been expected and it gave England some hope.
The visitors replied when they went in to bat by reaching 158 for one with Trescothick unbeaten on 63. He shared an unbroken 109-run partnership with Mark Butcher - who escaped twice on 14 and 30 when he was dropped in the gully by Matthew Hayden off Andy Bichel while Adam Gilchrist missed a regulation stumping off Shane Warne - finishing unbeaten on 51.
