Lara ton puts Windies in control

The West Indies have set a target of 262 thanks to a century from Brian Lara in their ICC Champions Trophy clash against Kenya in Colombo. Lara notched his 15th one-day international ton as they eventually cut loose from some tight Kenyan bowling. Th West Indies had taken the fight to the Africans before being pinned back by Odumbe, who was the most economical of the Kenyan bowlers.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle put on 61 for the first wicket in 11 overs before the latter's 33 ended when he miscued a hook from Thomas Odoyo straight to Tony Suji at midwicket. Chanderpaul, who had been dropped by Odoyo on three, made the most off his let-off as he slowly made his way to 43 while Lara settled in.

The pair added 55 in almost 18 overs before Chanderpaul's two-hour occupation of the crease was ended when he edged an attempted cut off Odumbe to wicketkeeper David Obuya. Carl Hooper combined in another half-century stand with Lara, but with just 20 from 34 balls he then made way for Ramnaresh Sarwan, whose almost run-a-ball 20 helped up the rate.

Wavell Hinds smashed 20 from just seven balls, including one four and two sixes, before being run out like Sarwan. The Windies need to win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals following their opening defeat to South Africa.
