India beat England by an innings and 46 runs on the final day of the third test at Headingley to level the four-match series 1-1. Nasser Hussain completed a century as England continued their rearguard action in a bid to salvage the third test. Hussain, resuming on 90 on the final day, produced two boundaries off pace bowler Zaheer Khan before reaching the mark, raising both arms in triumph at Headingley.
The home team, though, still faced a long struggle on a lively pitch to save the game after moving on to 255 for four after half-an-hour's play, needing 100 more runs to avoid an innings defeat. Hussain, on 105, and Alec Stewart, on 41, had put on 107 for the fifth wicket.
India amassed 628 for eight in their first innings before forcing England to follow on. Hussain's side lead the four-match series 1-0. Hussain, beaten twice by left-armer Khan, drives him through the covers in the first over. In Khan's second, he hooks him for four to get to 99 and bring up the hundred stand with Stewart.
Hussain flicks Khan for two runs to reach three figures, shaking hands with Stewart as the batsmen crossed for the second run before raising both arms in triumph. It was his 12th test century and fourth against India. He faced 184 balls, batting for four-and-a-quarter hours and hitting one six and 17 fours.
India 628-8 declared – England 273 and 309.
