England recover after first innings scare

England survived a five-wicket haul from India's leg-spinner Anil Kumble to end the first day of their second Test on 277 for six. The tourists got off to a brilliant start as Marcus Trescothick dominated a 124-run opening stand with Mark Butcher but was unlucky to be dismissed for 99 when play resumed after tea. "It was obviously not my day, I was a bit unlucky," he said. "I wasn't too disappointed though. Getting out on 99 didn't bother me that much."

Trescothick will be more concerned by England's subsequent collapse after an impressive opening. England lost five wickets for 56 after Butcher's exit with Kumble also removing skipper Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan in his seven overs before tea before accounting for Trescothick and Andrew Flintoff. All-rounder Craig White made a brave attempt to rally his team with an unbeaten 42 in the closing session. James Foster was the other not-out batsman on 15.
