Australia were bowled back into contention on the first day of the fifth Test against the West Indies in Sydney. The West Indies are already 4-0 down in the series but are hoping to prevent a whitewash and got off to the best possible start when they set a new record opening partnership in Australia through Sherwin Campbell and Wavell Hinds with a stand of 147 runs. Their previous best was 135 recorded by Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes in Brisbane in 1988-89.
However, the partnership of Campbell and Hinds was broken by Stuart MacGill who dismissed Campbell for 79 and followed up with the wicket of Hinds for 70 in his next over. MacGill then took the prized wicket of Brian Lara, who had looked in dangerous form. The wickets kept on tumbling for MacGill and in the end he took 7 for 92 to leave the West Indies on 256 for 9 at the close of play.
