Cricket: Hansie Cronje stresses innocence in match fixing

The South African Cricket Board are demanding that Indian police hand over the tapes on which the allegations of match-fixing against captain Hansie Cronje and three of his team-mates have been based.

Despite transcripts of the conversation which allegedly took place between Cronje and a London-based bookmaker being widely circulated through the media, the actual tapes still remain in the possession of the New Delhi police. He has strenuously denied the charges.

Cronje, who was Captain of not only South Africa last year, he also played with Ireland in their Benson and Hedges tournament. This is where Ireland plays as a county side in the English summer tournament, and as such, as the Counties are allowed a professional overseas player, Ireland, and indeed, Scotland, are also allowed a player of such calibre.
