Wexford back at rarefied stage but Cats pose daunting task

From 2007 to 2012, Wexford were the class of the field so often, winning four All-Irelands with the likes of Mags Darcy and Ursula Jacob at the peak of their powers.

The last five years have been more difficult however. Indeed, Saturday marks Wexford's first championship quarter-final since they were on the end of an upset at the hands of Dublin at that very stage in 2017.

This year's route to the first knockout round came via Group 1 where they pulled off a narrow but crucial victory over Limerick, before putting four goals past Offaly in a seven-point win this time last month.

But Tipperary then put four goals past them in the final group game on 1 August, although it did not prevent Wexford from reaching the quarter-finals.

That was a reality check and ultimately timely given that it's All-Ireland champions Kilkenny who stand in the way of a possible semi-final.

The Cats' group record also reads two wins and a defeat, with their closest rivals from recent years, Galway pipping them by a point in their final Group 3 fixture - a game that could have gone either way.

Given their recent league and championship pedigree, Kilkenny will be favourites against Wexford, although former Cork All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Aoife Murray wasn't ruling the Model county out of it completely when she previewed the match on RTÉ's Game On this week.

"(Wexford) probably picked one of the hardest teams to play against," she told Marie Crowe.

"But I don't think Kilkenny have been in a quarters since '16 possibly so it's kind of new territory for them as well.

"I don't think they'll be too disappointed that they're in a quarter-final. I think it's a great way to get into that knockout stage and that pressure.

"But with Kilkenny, it depends on what team really does turn up. So I don't think it's a lost cause at all for Wexford."

Wexford manager Kevin Tattan also sounded a positive note, explaining that their preparation was about ironing out smaller issues as opposed to worrying about grand narratives: "We just have small details that we need to work on. It's just the difference in quality (seen) in the last few minutes (against Tipperary).

"They used the ball a bit better than what we did. I thought we fought well and the battle in the middle third was really good so it’s just small details and it’s just how we use possession compared to how they use possession."

Six-time All-Star Anne Dalton has made a surprise return to the Kilkenny panel after retiring in January. Dalton has played in defence, midfield and attack for the Cats but is back as an emergency sub goalkeeper

Waterford on more even keel against confident Tipp

Tipperary breezed into the knockout stage with three wins from three in Group 1 and the best points-difference of any team in the preliminary stage.

Those wins came over Limerick, Offaly and Wexford, with nine goals plundered, including a haul of four against the latter who are fellow quarter-finalists.

So they go into the quarter-final in confident form against a Waterford side who have begun to click into gear after a difficult start to the year under new management in the shape of Derek Lyons, who took charge in January.

The six teams left standing this summer

The Déise finished rock bottom of their league group and then worse was to come when they endured relegation from Division 1 after a loss to Dublin.

All of which meant that they came into the championship group at a relatively low ebb and it appeared like their downturn would continue when they found themselves trailing Down in their opening Group 2 game.

But they discovered reserves of resilience to fight back and beat the Ulster side narrowly to get a first win on the board in a one-point win at Walsh Park and haven't looked back since with a convincing victory over Dublin in which they exacted revenge for their league relegation decider, before losing to Cork despite mustering three goals.

But the good vibes all started with the Down game according to All-Star defender Lorraine Bray who says that "confidence has definitely grown and even the buzz within the camp has definitely gone up a notch again".

Whether that will be enough to stun an impressive Tipperary remains to be seen but they are certainly in a better place than they were a couple of months back and it makes the ingredients for an intriguing quarter-final.
