Camogie President: Go and support our finals

Three titles are up for grabs on the biggest day of the year in camogie
Three titles are up for grabs on the biggest day of the year in camogie

Aileen Lawlor, President of the Camogie Association, is urging people to go and experience the atmosphere of All-Ireland finals day at Croke Park.

Today sees three games down for decision at Croke Park, with Cork and Kilkenny facing each other in the senior decider at 4pm.

Before that, Down meet Laois in the junior final (12pm), while intermediate honours will be fought out between Kilkenny and Limerick (2pm)

At the start of this year’s Liberty Insurance-sponsored championship, the Camogie Association launched a campaign Our Game Your Game, challenging GAA fans to embrace the game.

Inter-county players, including Mags D’Arcy of Wexford, Ashling Thompson of Cork, and Lorraine Ryan of Galway were used in the campaign.

Ahead of today’s action, Lawlor is hoping that increased numbers will make it to GAA HQ to witness what is on offer.

"It is our game but we want to make it everybody’s game" - Aileen Lawlor

Speaking to RTÉ Sport, she said: “All-Ireland day is the most important day on the camogie calendar. We would ask people to come and support. We had a campaign this year Our Game Your Game and we want people to come out and celebrate the game.

"They support their male counterparts in hurling but they don’t always go and support the camogie teams. It is our game but we want to make it everybody’s game.

"I would urge  people to come and experience the games at Croke Park. I know they won’t be disappointed."

Lawlor went on to explain what was involved in the Our Game Your Game campaign

"We took some of our top players from different counties and every week we released a video of them telling us their own personal lives, not just things on the pitch.

“They are all individuals, with different career paths; their own families; some have children. Essentially, it’s a snippet of what their lives are like and what they give to sport.

"We have had a huge feedback from the public and social media.  You don’t always hear about the players or their lives. This campaign has produced much excitement and has been most insightful."

Looking ahead to this afternoon’s triple-decker, the camogie supremo added: “In the junior final we have Down v Laois. Laois were beaten last year and they want to reverse that result. Down have been here a few times and haven’t got over the line, so they won’t want to be disappointed again.

“In the intermediate final, Limerick, who were beaten by a point last year, will be strong contenders. Kilkenny, however, won’t let them away with anything. That should be a good game.

“It’s Cork and Kilkenny in the senior. Kilkenny lost out in the final last year. Cork have had a drought and have managed to come through time. They had a replay (against Wexford) in the semi-final.

“Overall, I think we are going to have three very strong games.”
