Team Ireland returned home from the 77th Strandja Cup in Bulgaria with a silver and three bronze medals banked.

The event is the oldest international amateur boxing tournament having first been held in 1950.

Michaela Walsh was the silver medal winner in Sofia, but it could have so easily been gold after a 3-2 split decision loss to Uzbekistan's Nigina Uktamova in the final.

The Belfast boxer made a promising start, winning on all scorecards after the first round, but her opponent bounced back in the second before edging the decisive round.

It was Uktamova’s second win over an Irish fighter after defeating Dublin’s Niamh Fay in the semi-final, meaning Fay had to be content with bronze.

That was also the case for Offaly’s Gráinne Walsh after a 4-1 split decision loss to Laura Yessenkeldi in their 65kg welterweight semi-final on Saturday.

Caitlin Fryers took bronze in the flyweight 51kg class after a 5-0 semi-final defeat to Feruza Kazakova of Uzbekistan.
