It was a mixed night for Irish fighters at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool as Jennifer Lehane progressed to the next round while Adam Hession and Kelyn Cassidy saw their hopes come to an end at the first stage.
Lehane faced up to Poland's Wiktoria Rogalinska in the women’s 54kg class and sailed through to the next round following a 5-0 win on the judges’ scorecards at the M&S Bank Arena.
The bout was incredibly scrappy throughout with Rogalinska constantly holding anytime Lehane came forward, and the Meath fighter was never in any danger as she advanced to a round of 16 meeting with America’s Yoseline Perez on Monday with the Houston native a clear step up in class.
Adam Hession was next out for Team Ireland, but he was defeated by Australia’s Jacon Cassar in the men’s 60kg division.
The Irish co-captain, who shares the honour along with Aoife O’Rourke, lost 4-1 on the scorecards in what was a tight contest throughout.

The Galway man was unfortunate to be only 3-2 ahead on the scorecards after an active first round, with his opponent turning things around from there.
Cassidy lost 3-2 in his men’s 80kg bout with Dominican Republic’s Noel Pacheco.
The Waterford man edged the first round on the scorecards and was still ahead on two cards and level on two more entering the last, but Pacheco finished strongly to advance.
Irish fighters Grainne Walsh, Gavin Rafferty, Michaela Walsh, Louis Rooney and Martin McDonagh are in action on Friday.
