Stephen McKenna's third-round stoppage of Joe Lawes hailed as fight of year

Irishman Stephen McKenna has claimed the WBC International Silver Super Welterweight title by taking down Joe Lawes in Barnsley.

While only three rounds long, the bout, which took place at Oakwell Stadium on the undercard for Zak Chelli vs Callum Simpson, has been described as fight of the year.

Both McKenna and Laws suffered knockdowns in the opening minutes of the first round. The chaos continued into the second as both fighters landed big hits and rocked each other.

However, the Monaghan man prevailed and knocked his opponent down three times in the third round before Lawes' corner threw in the towel.

The crowd rose to their feet as 'The Hitman' McKenna claimed the belt and raised his arms in victory from the corner of the ring, taking his professional boxing record to 15-0, including 14 knock outs.
