Shannon Sweeney and Aoife O'Rourke secured gold medals at the Elite European Boxing Championships in Belgrade.

Sweeney enjoyed victory following a gruelling final bout against Zlatislava Gena Chukanova, while O'Rourke followed her onto the top of the podium later in the evening session, defeating Russia's Anastasiia Shamonova.

Westport boxer Sweeney was drawn into a war of attrition against her ultra aggressive opponent, however, she maintained her discipline throughout to take the contest by way of a split decision.

Fighting in the 50kg light flyweight division, Sweeney began the bout happy to box on the outside, looking to pick her punches, though her Bulgarian opponent kept real pressure on throughout the opening three minutes.

Amidst the madness, Chukanova managed to land a big right near the end of the round, which may have swung it for some undecided judges - Sweeney only got the verdict from two of the five ringside.

The spoiling tactics continued in the second round and the referee did little to help Sweeney as the Bulgarian grabbed and grappled, while the Irish boxer proved more cautious with her approach, looking to land the quality shots.

And the tactics worked for Sweeney who was awarded the second round 4:1 by the judges, which put her marginally ahead going into the final round.

Sweeney was caught early in another ugly round of boxing, however, Chukanova's energy levels dipped and she was frustrated that Sweeney gave her little chance to score.

In the end, it proved enough for Sweeney, who secured the gold medal thanks to a 4:1 decision from the judges.

O'Rourke would make it a double for Ireland as she fought later in the session, coming out on top against Shamonova in the middleweight final.

The Roscommon boxer secured her third European gold at the Serbia-hosted event, having previously won in 2019 and 2022.

O’Rourke started in style, leading with her long left jab to keep the fiery Russian at bay.

Using her height advantage well, she thwarted her aggressive oppoenent who was attempting to power her way inside, but looked limited with over the top right arms missing consistently.

It was a commanding opening from the Castlerea native and the judges were suitably impressed as she took the round 10:9 on all five scorecards.

If the first round showed the style, the second offered substance as O’Rourke appeared happy to brawl, throwing big rights and quick combinations, looking to knock the fight out of her opponent.

But it was far from pretty, and even the judges struggled to see a clear winner with three of the five handing the round to the Russian.

It resulted in a nervy final round, with Shamonova buoyed by the scoring of the second, which offered her a route back to the gold medal.

And there were more big bombs thrown inside the frenetic final three minutes as O’Rourke looked to revert to boxing on the outside, again utilising the jab, trying to regain control.

It was a strong finish to the contest from O’Rourke, scoring late in the round to perhaps sway the judges in her favour.

In the end, it went to a review, but the verdict returned in O’Rourke’s favour as she took the contest on a split decision, awarded the gold medal bout 5:2.
