Jude Gallagher moved one step closer to the Paris Olympics following a 4:1 split-decision victory over Morocco's Soulaimane Samghouli at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Italy.

The Tyrone featherweight has moved into the quarter-finals of the tournament and will box Sukur Owezow from Turkmenistan on Monday for a place at this summer's Games.

Gallagher joins Kelyn Cassidy and Grainne Walsh in Monday's decisive bouts as all three will look to join the five-strong Ireland squad that have previously qualified.

Earlier on Sunday, light heavyweight Cassidy moved to within one win of booking his place at Paris 2024 after a unanimous decision victory over Armenia's Rafayel Hovhannisayn in their last-16 bout.

After coming out on top on the judges' cards after the first round, the Waterford fighter dominated the second in the men's 80kg bracket.

Hovhannisayn, who was struggling with a cut above his eye, harried Cassidy in a frantic final round but the 26-year-old survived the onslaught to qualify for the quarter-finals.
