Dean Clancy has become an Under-22 European champion in bizarre circumstances after his opponent failed to show up for their final this afternoon.

Clancy won four fights this week in the 64kg category in Roseto degli Abruzzi in Italy.

The original schedule had the 19-year-old boxing against his Israeli opponent this evening.

However, that was changed and the fight was brought forward to this afternoon.

Ahmad Shtiwi failed to turn up for the contest and left the Sean McDermott Boxing Club man alone in the ring at the 3.20pm start time.

Confusion reigned as the red corner was empty and after officials allowed a period of time to pass, the fight was awarded to Clancy.

He follows the likes of Jason Quigley and Amy Broadhurst in winning gold at the competition.

Galway bantamweight Adam Hession fought for gold this evening but was stopped in the second round by his Armenian opponent Artur Bazeyan.
