When the 1992 Olympic Games came around, only three Irish athletes had claimed an Olympic gold medal. Michael Carruth would join that illustrious group after an outstanding summer in Barcelona.

The southpaw moved through the welterweight division and in a memorable final, defeated Cuba's Juan Hernández Sierra 13-10, thus securing Ireland's first boxing gold medal.

Here is a reminder of that memorable occasion 28 years ago.
