Munguia just too strong for O'Sullivan in Texas

An 11th-round stoppage saw Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan suffer defeat against Jaime Munguia in their middleweight bout in San Antonio, Texas.

A fight with all the trimmings of a world title encounter – without an actual belt on the line - saw Munguia announce his arrival into the middleweight division in style.

And while O'Sullivan did start well, scoring with two big hooks in the third round, Munguia quickly established a rhythm and caught his opponent with a number of body shots.

O'Sullivan did complain about a number of low blows and a shot to the back of the head, with the referee docking a point off Munguia in round six, there was no doubting the 23-year-old's dominance.

He remains undefeated, boasting a score of 35-0.

Last April, Munguia defeated Kildare boxer Dennis Hogan in somewhat controversial circumstances to land the WBO Super Welterweight title.

Hogan looked to be connecting with the more punches and showed great work to frustrate his opponent, rarely getting caught, with Munguia admitting it was a difficult night.

But the judges saw it differently and awarded the home boxer the win on a majority decision, 115-113, 116-112 and 114-114.
