Aidan Walsh has advanced to the last 32 of the World Boxing Championships after a split-decision win over Miroslav Kapuler of Israel in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
The 22-year-old Monkstown BC welterweight, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist and younger brother of Michaela Walsh, won 4-1 after a controlled, counter-attacking display.
Three of the four judges gave the decision to Walsh 30-27, one viewed it 30-26 while the Finnish judge saw it 29-28 in Kapuler's favour.
Walsh now advances to face Pat McCormack of England on Monday.
Michael Nevin is the next Irishman in action when he takes on Vytautas Balsys of Lithuania in the last 32 at middleweight tomorrow.
