Cork welterweight Christina Desmond is through to the last eight of the European Women's Elite Championships in Madrid after beating Leonie Van Leeuwen of the Netherlands.

Desmond earned a convincing unanimous decision over the Dutch fighter, who was forced to take a count in the third round.

The Irish southpaw was a bronze medallist at the 2016 European Championships, will meet Russia's number seed Darima Sandakova on Thursday where a win would guarentee her at least a bronze medal.

Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst is in action in the quarter-finals later today and will take on Russia's Rio 2016 bronze medallist and 2014 World Elite champion Anastasia Belokova.

Roscommon's Aoife O'Rourke has also been handed a bout against a Russian opponent, when she fights in Fiiday’s middleweight semi-finals.

O'Rourke is already guaranteed a bronze medal but will be hoping to upgrade that when she takes on the current Olympic Youth and World Youth champion, Anastasia Shamonova.
