Galway middleweight Gabriel Dossen's first National Championship title was a huge personal milestone.

Dossen beat last year's finalists Michael Nevin and Brett McGinty on the way to the decider in January, where he got the better of 2017 champ Emmett Brennan on a unanimous decision.

Still just 19 years old, he's crammed a lot into his life and has no intention of slowing down as he targets the top of the game and a place at next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

He moved to Ireland when he was three, his mother fleeing war-torn Ethiopa to set up a new life for her son in Ireland.

"My mother is from Ethiopia on the east side of Africa and my dad is from Liberia on the other side. I was born in the Ivory Coast," Dossen told RTÉ Sport's Darren Frehill.

"My mam has put so much work in for me. She's the person I'll give back to first before anyone."

"I injured myself the week of the semi-final. I went into it barely able to walk. I won the fight. In the final my knee was still at me but I was able to cope. I didn't box as great as I wanted to but put in a good enough performance. The judges obviously liked it."
