Ireland’s Kellie Harrington has guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in India.
Harrington beat Canada’s Caroline Veyre via unanimous decision in their lightweight quarter-final and will next face a semi-final bout where she can upgrade that medal to at least a silver.
The Dublin fighter has become only the second women to win medals at successive World Championships, following in the footsteps of Katie Taylor.
There was disappointment for Amy Broadhurst, the Dundalk southpaw bowed out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage with a loss to India’s Simranjit Kaur.
In a dramatic third round, Kaur hit the canvas but it was ruled a slip and Broadhurst was issued an official warning for slapping and docked a point.
The judges controversially ruled 3-1 in favour of the Indian welterweight.
