Evan Metcalfe has lost his appeal against the decision to strip him of Irish Elite senior title as a result of a failed drug test.

In August, Metcalfe lost his bantamweight crown and was banned for four months.

The Dubliner had beaten Thomas McCarthy back in February to take the title, but the result was disqualified after he tested positive for carboxy-THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a byproduct of cannabis.

Metcalfe didn't appeal the length of the ban, just the disqualification, but on Friday evening the Irish Athletic Boxing Association and Sport Ireland jointly announced the decision had been upheld.

"The appeal panel upheld the original hearing panel's decision and confirmed that Article 9 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules means that an automatic part of each sanction in individual sports in connection with an In-Competition test is the disqualification of the result obtained in that Competition and forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes related to this," a statement read.

Metcalfe had admitted to smoking what he thought was a cigarette at a party the week before the final but added in his evidence to the panel: "I didn't mean to take it. I didn't know what I was doing. I put my hands up to it."
