Irish boxing will be aiming to maintain a proud run of having medalled at every AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships since 2006 in India next month.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association have named a six-strong squad from the tournament which begins in New Delhi on 15 November.

Dubliner Kellie Harrington, a silver medal winner at light-welterweight at the 2016 World Elites, will wear the Irish lightweight vest at the 10th edition of the tournament.

Harrington had to settle for bronze at this year’s European Elites after losing to Finland’s Mira Potkonen, who beat Katie Taylor at the Rio Olympics, in the last four.

Belfast’s two-time Commonwealth Games finalist Michaela Walsh, also a bronze medal winner at the 2018 European Elites, lines out at featherweight in India.

Experienced international flyweight Ceire Smith and EU medallist Grainne Walsh box in the fly and welter classes and Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke will be making their World Elite debuts at light-welter and middle.

On the last occasion that the World Women’s Elite was held in New Delhi, current unified World IBF/WBA champion Katie Taylor claimed Ireland’s first AIBA gold at this level in 2006.

Ireland has taken home seven medals – five gold and a bronze for Taylor and silver for Harrington – from the last six World Women's Elites.

The Irish squad are in training camp in Kienbaum, Germany with the host nation, Team GB, Greece, Sweden and the USA in the build up to New Delhi.
