IABA chief executive Fergal Carruth has said they will do all they can to support the AIBA to ensure boxing remains in the Olympics for Tokyo 2020.

The inclusion of boxing is under severe threat due to a conflict between the IOC and the AIBA over reform issues that has so far not been resolved.

Boxing remains one of Ireland’s great medal hopes for the Olympics, and a number of amateur stars turned down advances from the professional of game with eyes on Tokyo.

As things stand, the event is in jeopardy.

Carruth told RTÉ Sport:  "It's very, very concerning.

"There is nobody within the sport that wouldn't be concerned at what was said by the IOC. We're just hopeful that the IOC and AIBA can resolve the matters and boxing can remain within the Olympic movement.

"It's so vital for our sport that it does. We'll be doing everything in our power to ensure it does happen. We'll be showing support wherever positive. That's all we can do.

"We can continue to ensure we give all our support to our world body and we'd be very hopeful these matters would be resolved.

"We have to keep doing what we're doing which is keeping our athletes involved and engaged at the very highest level.

"We have done that for years and years. It's vital for the sport boxing remains in the Olympic movement."
