Spike O’Sullivan will face another step-up fight after it was confirmed he will meet David Lemieux in Las Vegas next month.
The Cork boxer had been chasing a world title fight but will instead box on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin versus Canelo Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena on 15 September.
Lemieux is a former IBF champion, but suffered a major setback when outclassed by Billy Joe Saunders last December.
O’Sullivan enjoyed the best night of his career when knocking out Antoine Douglas on the same card.
Both have had routine wins since and this fight has been mooted for several weeks following a war of words on social media.
The winner will move closer to a shot at one of the big names of the middleweight division.
O’Sullivan said: "This fight is just another step towards fulfilling my ambition of becoming a world champion and providing a good life for my family.
"David Lemieux is just an object in my way that I fully intend smashing through. Then, I want Canelo or GGG— either one, it doesn't matter. I'm going to war."
