Carl Frampton beat Australia's Luke Jackson following a ninth round stoppage in Belfast to successfully defend his interim IBO featherweight title.

At wet and windy Windsor Park the hometown favourite made a promising start that suggested Jackson would struggle to last the 12-round distance.

He frequently landed powerful left and right hands and dictated the range and tempo at which they fought, quickly forcing the Aussie to focus on survival.

The underdog’s face was didn't take long to become swollen, though the dominant Frampton also suffered a cut by his right eye.

The Jackal forced the challenger to take a count in the eighth and as he went to work in the ninth the Australian’s corner sensibly threw in the towel.

Jackson showed signs of being broken down throughout rounds four-to-six and his resilience kept him on his feet following a vicious body shot during the fifth round.

He then took a similarly powerful right uppercut in the sixth, as he struggled to resist the former world champion’s consistent attacks.

After the fight, IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington got in the ring with Frampton, and their promoter Warren said: "We are now going to make the dream fight. These two guys in the ring together is a dream fight for the fans and we are going to make it happen. It will happen, definitely this year."

Frampton said: "Hopefully he can make the fight. I'm not for a second saying I'm a world champion because I have this interim (IBO) title. Josh is a world champion and I would love to be a world champion again.

"That fight is the easiest to make. He is here, so he's keen, and I'm as keen as mustard, so let's do it."

Warrington said: "I'm looking to get the fight - for me, I beat (Lee) Selby and I'm still ranked behind Carl, so I'd like to be number one for Christmas."

Frampton added about his Windsor Park debut: "It was an unreal atmosphere. The atmosphere was special and I knew it was going to be. The crowd are fantastic, I owe them everything. It just made my dreams come true here."
