Conor McGregor’s boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather failed to beat the pay-per-view buys record according to figures reported this morning, with Manny Pacquiao’s bout with the unbeaten fighter still holding top spot.

BoxingScene.com claims that the much-hyped McGregor v Mayweather clash grossed approximately 4.4 million pay-per-view buys in the US and that an official announcement could be made this week.

That would be around 200,000 less than Mayweather v Pacquiao in May 2015.

Both events cost just under $100 to buy.

The fight generated more than $600 million in overall revenue, with Mayweather scoring a guaranteed $100m and McGregor $30m, but both fighters are set to receive considerably more than those guarantees to the success of the promotion.
