Christina Desmond has secured a bronze medal at the European Boxing Championships in Sofia after a semi-final defeat against France's Maily Nicar.

The 20-year-old came out strongly and seemed to take the first round before her taller opponent worked her way back into the contest.

The Cork woman finished strongly and one judge gave her the nod but the other two opted for her opponent.

Nicar will face England's Natasha Gale in the final after she defeated Wales' Lauren Price.

Desmond is the only Irishwoman to medal at the games after the shock defeat of World silver-medallist Kellie Harrington and quarter-final exits for Moira McElligott, Shauna O’Keeffe  and Grainne Walsh.
