Michael O’Reilly put himself on the brink of a place at the Rio Olympics with a unanimous decision victory over Mongolian fighter Shinebayar Narmandakh.
The middleweight marched into the quarter-finals at the AOB World Qualifier in Azerbaijan and is now just one win away from heading to Brazil.
Scores of 30-27 in his favour from all three judges swung it the Portlaoise man's way.
He won bronze at the World Championships in Doha last October, but suffered a major setback at the European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey back in April when falling at the first hurdle to Finland’s Ilari Kijala.
He had made the last 16 in Baku after outclassing Vitalia Bandarenka of Belarus for a unanimous decision and takes on home favourite Kamran Shakhsuvarly on Thursday, with Olympic qualification in sight.
