Grainne Walsh advances in Worlds after gritty victory

Tullamore fighter Grainne Walsh battled past Polish opponent Hanna Soleckah to make the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan.

The welterweight followed Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington's lead to prevail on a unanimous decision after recovering from a difficult opening round to get the nod 3-0.

Walsh received a bye in the opening round and will face home favourite Valentina Khalzova next up.

Lightweight champion Taylor is two victories away from Brazil after she beat Sweden's Agnes Alexiusson on Saturday.

The Bray fighter won a unanimous decision on the judges' scorecards, taking the bout 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 as she looks to recover from her European Olympic qualifiers defeat to Azerbaijan's Yana Alekseevna in April.
