Former three-time world middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin is set to drop down to light-middleweight for his next bout.
The 33-year-old boxer will fight Jason Welborn on 17 October in Birmingham on the undercard of Frankie Gavin’s clash with British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Sam Eggington.
Macklin has fought as a middleweight for the majority of his professional career and it is nine years since he last competed as a light-middleweight when he was beaten by Jamie Moore.
The former European middleweight champion will also have a warm-up fight in Marbella against an unconfirmed opponent at the end of this month after opening a gym there.
Macklin was defeated by Argentinean Jorge Sebastian Heiland in Dublin last year and had considered retirement, but opted to return to the ring in May and cruised to a win over Hungarian-based Sandor Micsko in just two rounds.
