John Joyce claimed light-welterweight gold at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The St Michael’s Athy BC southpaw beat Russia’s Shakhin Aslanov on a split decision in the light-welterweight final.

Galway’s Frankie Cleary (Olympic BC) and Dublin’s Martin Stokes (Mulhuddart BC) were beaten in the 50kg and 54kg finals and had to settle for silver today.
Stokes lost out to England’s Ryan Garner on a unanimous decision.
Cleary was in against Daniel Asenov in slightly controversial circumstances.

The Bulgarian won the first round, before Cleary won the second.
However the scoring computer went down in the third and the five judges scored the bout on paper, with Asenov getting the decision 3-2.
Today’s medal haul saw Ireland finish in second spot in the medals table behind Russia.
