Melbourne Olympics bronze medallist Tony 'Socks' Byrne dies aged 82

Tony 'Socks' Byrne, who won a boxing bronze medal for Ireland at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, has died at the age of 82.

A native of Drogheda, Byrne won his medal in the lightweight division after losing his semi-final bout in Melbourne on a split decision.

Along with his family, he emigrated to Canada in the 1960s.

In 2006, the town of Drogheda unveiled a statue in his honour.
