Ceire Smith is through to the last-16 in the flyweight division of the World Boxing Championships after a devastating performance in Qinhuangdao, China.
Buoyed by a comprehensive opening win yesterday, the Cavan boxer sprung from the traps against Jamaica's Sarah-Joy Rae.
Although yielding inches, Smith stayed patient and picked out all the right punches, landing two scoring body shots to lead 2-0 after the first round.
The main damage was done in the round two though. Smith proved the much classier of the two and again took her time and picked out clean counter-punches.
She ended the round 5-1 ahead and was in no danger from then on. On the advice of her corner of Peter Taylor and Zuar Antia she stayed clear of trouble in the third and Smith saw out the win with another flurry of points in the last to win by 12 points to 4.
Smith will now box in the last-16, most likely on Tuesday. She thanked her supporters back home in Cavan and says she is taking it one step at a time.
Number one seed Katie Taylor, who is aiming for her fourth AIBA World lightweight title in-a-row, will face Rim Jouini of Tunisia in the last-32 on Monday morning.
Jouini claimed a bronze medal at featherweight (57kg) at the 2010 AIBA World Women's Championships in Barbados.
Monday's lightweight bouts begin at 7am (Irish time).
