Irish boxers David Oliver Joyce and Paddy Barnes are both just one fight away from booking their place at the London 2012 Olympics.

Both fighters claimed victory in their bouts at the Olympic Qualifiers in Turkey on Tuesday and booked their places in the quarter-finals.

Joyce claimed a comfortable victory over Germany's Arthur Bril in the Lightweight Division.

After a closely fought first round, which Joyce edged 7-6, the Irishman took control of the fight and extended his lead to 10-5 at the end of the second round.

Joyce pulled away further from his opponent in the last round and eased to a 22-14 victory.

The boxer from the St Michael's club in Athy is taking nothing for granted going into his quarter-final with Evaldas Petrauskas of Lithuania.

"I sparred him (Petrauskas) in Ukraine and he's a strong, strong lad. He loves coming for a fight and I love coming for a fight but tomorrow I'm going to have different tactics against him," he said on RTÉ's Sport At 7.

"He loves a brawl, he loves to slug in there so my tactics are to hit him and move. Hopefully I can get that lead against him and he can come on to me again and I'll pick him off."

Barnes will meet Stefan Caslarov of Romania on Wednesday for a place in the Olympics after he stopped Istvan Ungvari in the second round.

The Irishman was trailing after the first round, 4-2, but a series of devastating punches midway through the second round forced his opponent to take a standing 8 count. After the count, Ungvari showed no appetite to continue and the referee stopped the fight.

Barnes said: “It was good to get the first fight out of the way; it felt brilliant. It was also good to get the first win and get back on track. He ran and ran but once I got him into the corner he was nearly crying. He was winching, and I knew he wanted out of there.”

He added: “I was probably too eager to go after him in the first round. Everything is 100 per cent, and I am really fit. I am looking forward to the next fight. I don’t know who I will be fighting; but he will have to be worried.”
