The Irish Amateur Boxing Association had its protest against Joe Ward’s contentious light-heavyweight defeat to home favourite Bahran Muzaffer rejected in Trabzon, Turkey on Monday night.
Ward, the current European champion, was adjudged to have lost the last-16 contest 18-15 to the Turkish fighter in the final Olympic qualifying tournament.
The IABA lodged a protest immediately after the bout but that appeal was turned down by the Appeals Jury as no rules had been broken and the result stands.
Muzaffer, who was beaten 10-2 by eventual silver medallist Kenneth Egan in the last 16 of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, was 4-3 up after the first round against Ward and held a 12-11 advantage going into the third and final round in which he was adjudged to have scored another six points.
Meanwhile, Adam Nolan and Tommy McCarthy advanced to the quarter-finals earlier today, but Ross Hickey and Con Sheehan, who was beaten 17-12 by Turkish super-heavyweight Muhammet Erkan Aci, bowed out.
Hickey lost 24-11 to Dimitri Galagot of Moldova in the light-welterweight class this afternoon.
Belfast heavyweight McCarthy, who must win gold in Trabzon to qualify for the Olympics, convincingly beat Copla Alem of Bosnia & Herzegovina 12-3 this evening to book his ticket into the last eight, where he'll meet Josepf Darmos of Hungary on Wednesday.
Nolan, who will qualify for the London Olympics if he reaches the welterweight final, earned a 14-9 decision over Thomasz Kot of Poland today to set up Wednesday's quarter-final clash with Tamerlan Abdullayer of Azerbaijan.
Paddy Barnes and David Olive Joyce will be involved in last-16 contests tomorrow.
Both boxers will achieve Olympic qualification if they reach the semi-finals in the light-flyweight and lightweight divisions.
