Ireland’s Ryan Burnett won a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Wednesday after winning the 48kg boxing final against Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizida.
Burnett claimed victory in a scoreline of 13-6, avenging defeats to Alizida in the President's Cup and AIBA World Youth final in the last year.
Burnett dropped his opponent with a sweet left in a neutral corner in the third en route to victory.
Speaking after the final, Burnett, who had Jim Moore and Jimmy Payne working his corner and who is coached by Gerry Storey at the Holy Family BC, said he was thrilled.
'It's a dream come true for me. I couldn't believe the level of support I got from the Irish fans this morning.
'They really made themselves heard and it was a great boost as it was tough in there.
'I'm thrilled with the win,' said the first ever boxing champion at the Youth Olympics.
The 18-year old was already guaranteed a silver medal at the inaugural event.
Burnett scored 14 points and conceded just one on the way to Wednesday's final.
