Keith Monks, Rohan Date, Paul Kelly, Anthony Upton, James Myres and Fergal McRory booked their tickets to the quarter-finals of the IABAs Open Youth Competition with impressive wins this Saturday.
Michael O'Reilly, Mark McLoughlan and Shane McCarron also advanced, albeit by one point margins, in three bouts that went all the way down to the final bell at IABA headquarters.
Meanwhile, this evening’s session saw Robert Murphy and Ger Slane produce the first count-back of the tournament, Murphy progressing by a three point margin.
The Eddie Byrne versus Stephen Broadhurst duel was another tight affair, Broadhurst eventually advancing, while Chris Mullaly impressed in his bout with Adam Hannessy.
The tournament will recommence with quarter-finals next Friday and Saturday 22/23 January.
The finals will now be held on Saturday 30 January. The semi-finals will take place on Friday 29 January.
The IABA is using the Open Youth Competition to help with their selection process for the 2010 AIBA World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan.
The AIBA World Youth Championships glove-off in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 20 April.
The tournament, which will see athletes box over three, three minutes rounds, will act as the only qualifier for the 2010 Youth Olympics Games in Singapore next August.
