Joe Calzaghe has called for Ricky Hatton to retire following his damaging defeat to Manny Pacquiao earlier this month.

Calzaghe, who retired in February with a record of 46 wins from 46 fights, believes time has caught up with the Hitman, whose loss to the Filipino was the second of his career following defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2007.

Hatton remains undecided over his future following the second-round knockout in Las Vegas, but Calzaghe insists the time has come to quit.

'It was a devastating loss against Pacquiao and I think it's time for him to retire,' he said.

'The most important thing in boxing is your health. I watched the fight and Ricky took some heavy shots.

'He just didn't seem to turn up on the night.

'A lot of people will be telling Ricky what to do, but only he knows what is right.'

Calzaghe believes, however, Hatton might be tempted by a swansong in front of his adoring fans.

'Maybe he'll want one last fight in Manchester to get a win,' he added to the Daily Star Sunday.

'You wouldn't blame him if he felt that way.'
