The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) has become a limited company as of a convention vote in favour of a change in its status on Sunday.

The change of status happened at midnight, Sunday, 29 March on foot of delegates at a re-convened convention at the Downhill Hotel in Ballina, Co Mayo, unanimously voting in favour of a proposal to make the switch.

After the decision, the IABA installed a new Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of Dr John Lynch.

On the sporting front, the Association is rolling out the heavy artillery for next months Ahmet Cup finals in Turkey.

Irish head coach Billy Walsh reckons that the team will have to out-gun strong Cuban, Chinese and Russian teams to get amongst the medals.

World Champion Katie Taylor, Olympic bronze medallist Paddy Barnes and European Union Champion John Joe Nevin are among those who will box at the event, which is due to be held in Istanbul from 14-20 April.

Euro bronze medallist, Ross Hickey, World Youth star Tommy McCarthy and EU champ David Oliver Joyce will compete in another top international tournament in Albania, which will also be held in mid-April.

Walsh said: ‘The Ahmet Cup is always very competitive and I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubans, Chinese or Russians showed up. This is World Championships year and each country will be looking to get good competitive tournaments under their belts.

‘We'll certainly get that in Turkey next month and we have also sent another squad to Albania.’

The World Championships glove off in Milan in September.
