World champion boxer Joe Calzaghe's fight with his former manager over money at the British High Court came to an end today.

The judge, Mr Justice Wyn Williams, reserved his verdict on the claims until next week after the eight-day trial.

Frank Warren, through his company Sports Network, sued the 36-year-old undefeated super-middleweight champion for £1 million for allegedly breaking a verbal agreement that he would promote further fights for him.

Mr Calzaghe is counter-claiming about £2.5 million for money he says is still owed to him from the last fight promoted by Frank Warren, against Bernard Hopkins.

The boxer, who retired from the ring last month, claimed he was 'unfairly exploited' by 57-year-old Mr Warren and was forced into signing contracts under duress.

But he denies that he ever shook hands on an agreement to fight again for Mr Warren after the Hopkins fight.

In his closing speech, Ronald Thwaites, representing the promoter, said the fighter's evidence was 'deeply flawed' and it was 'preposterous' for Mr Calzaghe to claim he was under such pressure that he did not know what he was signing.

Ian Mill, counsel for the boxer, claimed Mr Warren and his company secretary Ed Simons had given evidence that was 'patently untruthful and inherently unbelievable'.

He said Mr Calzaghe had increasingly come to resent his treatment by Mr Warren as the years went by.

Mr Mill said that throughout the 10-year relationship between the pair, Sports Network had always ensured there were written contracts.

'It is inconceivable that, in the case of Mr Calzaghe's last and most lucrative fight, Sports Network would not have wanted to have such a written promotional contract,' said Mr Mill.
