There were mixed fortunes for Irish boxers at the European Senior Championships in Liverpool on Tuesday after Ross Hickey advanced to the semi-finals but Ryan Lindberg bowed out.

Hickey beat Famil Suleymanov of Azerbaijan 6-1 in the afternoon's lightweight quarter-final to guarantee himself at least a bronze medal from the continental deciders on Merseyside.

But Belfast bantamweight Lindberg is out following a narrow 5-4 quarter final reversal to Germany's Denis Makarov.

Hickey, of the Grangecon club, meets Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus in Thursday's 60Kg semi final.

Safaryants beat England's Tom Stalker 6-4 in his quarter final.

David Oliver Joyce, John Joe Joyce, Eamon O'Kane and Con Sheehan will be all be involved in quarter final
bouts on Wednesday.

The preliminary rounds of the European Senior Championships are being held at the Greenbank Academy with the finals pencilled in for the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday, 15 November.
