Ross Hickey and Ryan Lindberg are just one bout away from claiming at least bronze medals at the 37th European Senior Championships at the Greenbank Academy in Liverpool following wins yesterday.

But Conor Ahern and Willie McLoughlin are out after suffering reversals on Merseyside.

Hickey, from the Grangecon club in Co Wicklow, beat Ukrainian lightweight Oleksandr Kluchko last night to set up a quarter-final clash with Denis Makarov of Germany on Tuesday.

But McLoughlin, of the Illies Golden Glove club in Donegal, lost out to German welterweight Jack Culcay-Keth by a five point margin.

Earlier yesterday, bantamweight Ryan Lindberg chalked up his second win in 48 hours courtesy of an 11-3 triumph over 2006 European silver medallist Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan.

Flyweight Ahern, from the Baldoyle club in Dublin, exited the tournament after being disqualified in the fourth round after receiving his third public warning for holding versus Sweden's Salonmo N'Tuve - who received two public warnings.

Reigning Irish featherweight and 2008 European Union champion, David Oliver Joyce meets English 2008 Olympian Joe Murray today.

Light heavyweight Darren O'Neill will also be involved in a last 16 action.

The preliminary rounds of the Championships are being held at the Greenbank Academy with the finals pencilled in for the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday 15 November.
