Irish fighters primed for Polish challenge

Irish 2008 Olympian Paddy Barnes has received a bye into the sixth European Union Championships light flyweight final following Monday’s draw at the Cetniewo Olympic Centre in Poland.
 
The Holy Family ace will face either Hungary's Bedak Pal or Poland's Lukasz Maszyzyk in Saturdays 48Kg decider after just three boxers entered the 48kg division following English light flyweight Darren Langley's withdrawal because of a leg injury.
 
Meanwhile, Irish captain Ken Egan will meet either Argon Dzila of Switzerland or Caner Sayak of Turkey in the light heavyweight semi- final on Thursday.
 
Jamie Conlon, John Joe Nevin, John Joe Joyce, and Willie McLoughlin will be involved in quarter-final action on Tuesday.

David Oliver Joyce, Eric Donovan, Darren Sutherland and Con Sheehan will be in the ring on Wednesday for last-eight bouts.

Egan, Sutherland and Roy Sheahan, who is out injured, claimed gold medals at the 2007 European Union Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin.
