Irish boxers John Joe Joyce, Kenny Egan and Darren Sutherland are through to the semi-finals at the final Olympic Qualifying tournament in Athens.

The Athy light-welterweight beat Keevorg Galstian of Greece. Joyce won on countback after they had finished level on 18 points each.

Middleweight Sutherland also claimed a place in the last four after overcoming his Serbian opponent, while Irish team captain Egan beat Daniel Kool of the Netherlands 13-4 to make the semi-final.

There was disappointement though for Conor Ahern and David Oliver Joyce who were both knocked out.

Ahern lost 20-12 to his Bularussian opponent, while Joyce was beaten 19-17 by Bashir Hassan of Sweden.

However, the IABA have put in an appeal against the result of the last 57kg fight this evening, in which David Oliver Joyce was beaten.

The claim is that Joyce's opponent should have been issued with at least one public warning for holding in the final round.

The two finalists are quaranteed a place at the Olympics, but if Sutherland loses his semi-final he will go into a box-off with the other beaten midddleweight semi-finalist for a spot in Beijing.
