John Joe Joyce was beaten on points, 20-15, by Romanian Ionut Gheorge at the Olympic qualifying even in Pescara in Italy today.

Joyce was edged out by his opponent and must now go the final qualifying tournament in Athens to fight once again a place in the Beijing Olympics.

Ireland team captain Ken Egan suffered a similar fate losing out 17-13 to Ramazan Magamedau from Belarus at light heavyweight.

Nevin overcame the Ukrainian on a 32-16 point-score.
