John Murray advanced from the preliminary rounds of the National Senior Championships after receiving a walkover against the injured Aaron Sadlier at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Last night’s action commenced with a heavyweight bout between Patrick Phelan and Con Sheehan.

Sheehan started this contest the brighter, connecting with straight left jabs to open up a 4-1 lead. The Tipperary man also took the next two rounds before closing out the fourth to record a convincing victory.

Jimmy Sweeney and Tommy Sheehan both received public warnings in the fourth of their bout, but it was Sheehan, who had Dominic O'Rourke and Eric Donovan in his corner, who took the honours after a very tight opening three rounds.

Despite a height and reach disadvantage, Limerick heavyweight Martin Sheehan produced a brave display against Niall Kennedy to take all four rounds en route to a 13-point victory.

Jamie Power started his clash with Patrick Corcoran in explosive fashion, forcing the Galway man into two standing counts in the first.

But Power appeared to be running out of steam in the third and Corcoran took maximum advantage, moving to within
one point of his opponent before taking the fourth round to claim victory.

The leather flew in a high-tempo contest between Maxel Oshun and Graham Riggs, with Oshun landing a beautiful left hook in the third.

However, Rriggs was always in control, obliging his opponent to take two standings counts in the fourth before being handed a convincing verdict.

John Joe Nevin impressed in the first bantamweight bout of the evening against Daniel Coughlin. Nevin commanded all four rounds in this contest before having his hand raised.

Derek Thorpe edged out Francis Campbell, while Eamon Touhy was always in control against Willie Casey.

Kevin Fennessey was the second Clonmel man to record a victory after edging all four rounds against Sean Kilroy.

Meanwhile, Irish 2008 Olympian Paddy Barnes and Jimmy Moore will clash in a repeat of last years light flyweight final after both boxers received byes into Friday’s final.
